I can't begin to tell you how many riders I meet who have a bike worth $30,000 or more and carry the minimum amount of motorcycle insurance required in New York. Why don't they have fire and theft insurance? Why don't they have comprehensive on their HD Road King? Even a garbage box would take more than one paycheck to replace. Why not be fully insured?
These riders are banking on the fact that they will not be in an accident and that nobody will steal their scoot.
But at BIKR LAW, we know that it is not "if" you will crash your bike, but, "when." It doesn't take much. A motorist talking on a cell phone swerves into you at 55 mph and you're toast. Or an unlicensed uninsured cab left turns you. In either case - you lose.
I am a New York motorcycle attorney who has been practicing law since 1987. I also spent eight years working in the insurance industry. I understand how insurance companies operate and am able to achieve success for many of my clients who are uninsured or underinsured. Contact me to learn more, and do read my Legal Tips section regarding insurance.

The cost of being uninsured or underinsured adds up quickly. First, let's assume you're alive. Then let's add it up.
Under the Federal EMTALA statute (the "anti-dumping" statute), hospitals are prohibited from refusing to treat patients because of lack of ability to pay for services.
If you do not have health insurance, you're in really deep. Medical coverage is not part of the required insurance for motorcycles in New York. Unless you have private insurance, you may not have coverage to pay for your medical bills or damage to your scoot.
If the driver of the car can be identified, we can file a claim against his or her auto insurance.
In this case, the lack of no-fault coverage can work in your favor, especially if you suffer from a "soft-tissue" injury that includes bulging disks, nerve impingement and "whiplash." We could file an action against the vehicle that hit you without fear of having the judge throw it out for being over the compensation threshold under New York's no-fault law applicable to automobiles and pedestrians involved in an accident with a car or truck.
Finding the driver who caused your accident will be critical. The really bad news is you're $30,000-plus custom scoot is nothing but a pile of twisted rubble in your driveway. The good news — you saved money on insurance. Sound familiar?
The point is this - You need a motorcycle attorney, because your options may be limited.
